The name Josef was passed down from grandfather to grandson
In earlier times, Josef was one of the most common male names in Czechia and was often passed down from father to son. The Vachuška family records show two cases where the name Josef was passed down through two generations, meaning that the grandfather, father, and son all had this name. This happened when Josef, born in 1840 in Lažany, named his second son after himself, and 31 years later, his firstborn son did the same. The second such case concerned Josef, born in 1852 in Slatina, who passed on his name to his firstborn son, who did the same. In this second case, it cannot be ruled out that the last Josef also passed on his name to his son, the fourth Josef in a row, but confirmation or refutation would require further research in the registers.
In the past, it was also quite common that when a child died at a young age, the next child of the same sex (brother or sister) was given the same name. In this situation, there were also sad cases where both children named one name died in childhood. There were several such cases in the Vachuška family, but only in one case did the parents give the same name to their third son as well. František, the third of that name, was born in 1877, while his brothers Františeks died at one year of age and before reaching one year of age. It is not certain how old the third František lived to be; this would require further detailed research.
